Domestic Goddess??? Not in this House!

It will come as no surprise to most of you that when it comes to the world of domesticity I am absolutely NOT a goddess! Ever since I moved in with Adam this became extremely apparent. Don’t get me wrong; with Adam’s help we keep a clean house, I can decorate like nobody’s business and I do my best to keep up with the laundry. So no I’m not a HORRIBLE wife. But there are definitely some areas where I could use some improvement. Like sewing for example; the other day I lost a button on a pair of jeans and I had the best of intentions to fix them… busted out the sewing kit, sat down on the bed…. and stared at the pants… you know like if I looked at them long enough I would suddenly become this expert seamstress. Well that didn’t happen, but I did stare at them long enough for Adam to come up stairs, roll his eyes, grab the needle and thread from my hands, and save me from a horrible sewing job which would no doubt have resulted in some embarrassing debacle in public with my pants coming undone. I don’t know maybe this was my plan the whole time (Adam fixing them, not the public debacle.) But as I sat there thanking God for blessing me with a man that makes up for my domestic inefficiencies, I began to realize that maybe I should learn how to do this for myself. I asked Adam to teach me, so he very patiently explained what he was doing… again (no this wasn’t the first time I had this epiphany.) Hopefully next time I loose a button on my pants, I’ll have retained some of this lesson and actually attempt to do it for myself (and no I don’t mean just staring at it until Adam comes and saves me!)

Another skill that I’m sadly lacking in is cooking. I was raised in a home with amazing parents. The house was clean, we were well fed, we went on great vacations, camping trips, etc. They helped me with my homework and taught me so so much… except for how to cook. My mom is a tomboy; ask her yourself she will agree. Cooking was never something she wanted to spend much time on. And I am extremely stubborn at learning anything new. So with that combination I left home knowing how to make very few things: anything in a box (i.e. Mack and Cheese, Hamburger Helper, etc) schnitzel (thank you Grandma!) and I’m a whizz at mashed potatoes! Now this wasn’t a very big deal in college, but as I became an adult, moved out into the “real world” and got married I started to once again have an epiphany… I should probably learn how to cook!  Thankfully once again Adam knows how to cook, so I began asking him to teach me. Four + years of living together and two years of marriage later I finally feel like I’m getting the hang of it. I can follow most recipes and even improvise a little, I have a whole arsenal of dinners that I’ve become a master at and I’m even starting to bake! For instance last night I came home and decided to bake some banana bread (no not because I’m turning into Betty Crocker, but because we had some bananas on the counter that were quickly approaching their expiration date.) I’ve become pretty good at making banana bread and feel pretty comfortable doing it. And last night like usual the bread came out great, not too brown, not gooey, perfect. So I sat down to eat a piece and promptly bit into way too much salt or baking soda or something. YUCK! The rest of the bread was good but I think that one bite was just a little reminder not to get too cocky. I’m a long way from earning my title of Domestic Goddess. But hey I’m a work in progress, maybe by the time we have kids I’ll actual feel comfortable with this whole domestic thing! Wish me luck!

Traditional Anniversary Gifts & Lame Advice from Google

Adam and I's 2nd Wedding Anniversary is coming up next month so just for fun I decided to do a little Google search (FYI- Google is my best friend, it makes me a genius, helps me spell, and finds all my great quotes) on what the traditional anniversary gift is for 2 years. While skimming through a few sites I found this little gem of advice: (hey I never said Google was perfect.)

"It is vital that you remember both the number of years you have been married and the date the marriage occurred! There are many who have discovered the hard way that forgetting these two pieces of information can have very negative effects on their marital relationship."

Hhhmm ok well thanks for clearing that up, I could have really messed that up, god forbid I don't remember BOTH of those... This is common knowledge... right?

Anyway after searching a bit more I came across a list of traditional wedding gifts for certain anniversaries and for 2 years the gift is.... cotton. Wow cotton (insert sarcasm here.) Is it just me or are traditional anniversary gifts totally random?  I guess I have to hang in there a while to get something like say gold or diamonds... Ha ha I'm kidding! I have a great hubby that I'm sure will think of something incredibly sweet for our anniversary... right babe? :)

I'm Starting a Bucket List!

Update June 29th, 2011: I've added my Bucket List as a permanent section on the blog. You can find it below my About Me & Blog Archive on the left hand side. This way you can see my progress on the list. But I expect progress to be slow... This is life long list, not an immediate wish list.

After hearing about other people's Bucket Lists I've decided to start my own. I think it's so important to create a list of things you want to strive towards. Whether it be important career milestones, travel experiences, life goals, etc having a list of things you want to accomplish while you're on this Earth is a great way to keep pushing for them. Simply keeping track of the things that will make your life better or more fulfilled. Anyway here is the start of my list, everywhere from goofy to serious things I want to work towards. This list is a work in progress and I hope to add many more things as my life goes on. I also plan on keeping my list updated on the blog as I check things off or add them. If you have any great ideas for a bucket list please let me know! I would love to hear them!

YCP Empty Mug and Patio Concert

Happy Friday Everyone!!! I for one am THRILLED that the weekend is almost here! This has been a great week, full of lots of fun and exciting things! But it has also been quite an exhausting week! Lots of late nights, cocktails, good friends and laughter equal one very very tired Jamie! But at least it’s a good tired! :)

Anyway this Wednesday I had the opportunity to attend another amazing YCP, Empty Mug event. Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with YCP let me fill you in on what they are all about and how this group became a part of my life. YCP stands for Young Citizens of Philanthropy; they are a nonprofit group that "works with The Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center to provide awareness and bring an end to Domestic Violence.” (I took this straight off one of their fliers, trying to be exact here!) SO basically they are a group of young professionals, with big hearts, that want to make a difference, help The Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center, and have a good time while they do it!

Now how did I get involved with this? Well it’s not really me but Adam (and like any totally amazing spouse I am supportive of what he is passionate about. Well at least I try to be...) Adam works for a great local commercial construction company and they just so happened to build The Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center and a great relationship was formed between the two companies /groups. So when Adam had the opportunity to join the YCP board he jumped at the chance. Now I tease about the whole supportive wife role but I honestly think getting involved in the things your spouse is passionate about helps to build a great relationship. And I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know the other members of YCP and attending their numerous events.

Every month they put together an event called the Empty Mug to raise money and awareness and each time they just seem to get better and better. June’s Empty Mug took place on the roof top patio at LoDo’s Downtown and with the help of a local band Della the evening was a blast! I mean honestly what’s better than awesome live music, great people, yummy food and drinks, and a gorgeous Colorado summer day!?!? Oh that’s right doing it all for a good cause. Ok so this might come across a little corny but frankly I feel privileged to be a small part of such a good group of people.

Check out some pics (courtesy of my IPhone, sorry for the quality!) from the Empty Mug below and if you are interested in more information about YCP or the Women’s Crisis and Family Outreach Center you can find it here http://www.twcfoc.org/ycp.html or on Facebook.

Have a safe and happy weekend!

My Name is Jamie and I'm Addicted to Blogs!!!

Ok so I know I said I was going to blog about the YCP Event that I went to last night, and I will. I PROMISE! But I've been a bit distracted today and haven't had the time to properly think of what I want to say. So stay tuned! Now for what has distracted me ... Blogs. Yep hilarious blogs! I guess I need to work on my material if I'm going to entertain people like some of the other blogs out there. I started my day with great intentions, got all my work done in record time, decided to glance at Facebook and saw several links to blogs on the news feed. Now being the total blog junky that I am I had to check them out, and that is where my productivity for the day went downhill.... They were hysterical, laugh at my desk, snort, and cry hysterical. So so funny. I had to make myself stop reading and get back to work. So being the good Samaritan that I am I thought I would pass them along to my blog readers. Because well if I cant make you laugh like that someone should! :)

The Bloggess, this lady is funny, really really funny. Although maybe a bit off her rocker! But quick disclaimer, she seems to like the "F" word... a lot, so just be prepared! After reading her fist post I promptly sent Adam a message and warned him to keep it in mind next time I want to buy new towels! ;)

Hyperbole and a Half, this person is incredibly random but this post was soooo funny I had to share!

Anyway I hope you guys find these as entertaining as I did! Of course I haven't read through either of their entire blogs, and I know nothing about the writers, but if you're looking for a laugh I think you'll enjoy them. :)

And of course here are a few quotes!
